What It Costs to Paint the Interior of a Home in Lexington, NC

January 12, 2026 6 min read

The most common question we get on an interior painting call is simple: what's this going to cost? The honest answer is that two houses with identical square footage can land at very different prices, and the difference is almost always prep work, surface condition, and how much trim is involved.

Rather than throw a number at you that may not apply to your home, here is how a painting estimate is actually built in Lexington and the surrounding Triad — so you can read any quote you receive, including ours, and understand what you are paying for.

1. Square footage sets the floor, not the price

Wall area drives material volume and roll time. A 1,200 sq ft ranch with open rooms and 8-foot ceilings takes far less labor per square foot than a 1,200 sq ft home chopped into small rooms, closets, and hallways. More corners and more cut-in lines mean more brush work, and brush work is the slowest part of any paint job.

That's why a quote based purely on a square-footage multiplier is usually either too high for simple layouts or too low for complicated ones.

2. Prep work is where the real money goes

Painting over a wall is fast. Making that wall worth painting is not. Before a brush touches anything, we're patching nail holes, cutting out and re-taping cracked drywall seams, sanding old texture and roller ridges, caulking gaps at trim, and priming stains so they don't bleed through the finish coat.

Older homes around Lexington and Thomasville often have plaster patches, settling cracks above door frames, and decades of accumulated touch-up in mismatched sheens. Every one of those is prep time. When one quote is dramatically cheaper than another, prep is usually the line item that got quietly removed.

3. Ceilings, trim, and doors are separate work

If you're comparing two quotes, check whether both include ceilings and trim. That single difference can swing a price by 30 to 40 percent.

  • Ceilings: flat white ceilings add labor and often need stain-blocking primer around HVAC vents and past leaks.
  • Trim and baseboards: slow, detail-heavy, and usually a different paint (semi-gloss enamel) than the walls.
  • Doors and door frames: each side is a separate surface, and painted doors need dry time before they can be closed.
  • Closets: small, awkward, and time-consuming relative to their square footage.

4. Color changes and paint grade

Going from a dark accent wall to a light neutral often requires an extra coat or a tinted primer. Going light-on-light may only need one coat. Paint grade matters too — a premium washable finish costs more per gallon but holds up dramatically better in hallways, kids' rooms, and rental units that get scrubbed regularly.

For rentals and turnovers, we usually recommend a durable eggshell in a standard neutral so future touch-ups match without repainting an entire wall.

5. How to compare quotes fairly

A quote that answers all five of those questions is a real quote. A number on a napkin is a guess, and guesses tend to grow once the work starts.

  • Ask what surfaces are included: walls only, or walls, ceilings, trim, and doors?
  • Ask how many coats are quoted, and whether primer is included.
  • Ask what prep is included — patching, caulking, sanding, stain blocking.
  • Ask who moves and covers the furniture and flooring.
  • Ask what brand and grade of paint is being used.
